A woman who stabbed her casual lover in the chest with a steak knife, puncturing his lung, has been sentenced to home detention. Hallie Wade and the victim had a volatile history and were both on bail conditions to not contact one another at the time of the July 2, , incident, defence lawyer Patrick Mooney told the New Plymouth District Court. While his client, who appeared for sentencing via audio visual link from Auckland, was guilty of stabbing the man, Mooney said there was an element of provocation, which Crown prosecutor Jacob Bourke accepted.
Wade, in her early 30s, previously pleaded guilty to a charge of wounding with intent to injure after she stabbed the man in his chest with a single strike. The pair, whose relationship was described in the Crown summary of facts as “friends with benefits”, spent the afternoon of the incident drinking alcohol at Wade’s neighbour’s house in New Plymouth. An argument later erupted between the two during which she told the man she felt like stabbing him.
Wade told police her neighbours had asked the man to leave their address a number of times. After heeding their requests, the man returned and peered through the windows, she claimed. After Wade stabbed the man she left him bleeding, and did not offer him any assistance. The injured man ended up seeking medical help from a stranger and spent five days in intensive care. In court, Judge Gregory Hikaka said Wade has had previous issues with violent and dysfunctional relationships and her offending was indicative of those.
Wade had spent time in custody and on electronically monitored bail for the offending without issue, he said. She was now staying with a family member where she has achieved stability, he said. Judge Hikaka accepted Wade was remorseful for her actions at Friday’s hearing.

Bruce W. Journal of Foraminiferal Research ; 20 1 : 71— Geohistory analyses of Cenozoic marine basins rely heavily on the precision of foraminiferal dating and paleodepth determinations. A rapid method of paleodepth assessment has been devised for the New Zealand region, using a combination of planktonic percentage and the derived depth ranges of dominant benthic foraminifera and a number of diagnostic intrabathyal benthic taxa.
This method together with biostratigraphic dating has been applied to approximately 2, foraminiferal faunas in 26 drillhole sequences and used to construct paleobathymetric, subsidence, and tectonic curves and maps for Taranaki Basin, New Zealand. Taranaki Basin sequences show a late Cretaceous-early Miocene transgressive phase initiated by Tasman Sea rifting which split New Zealand continental crust off from Gondwana. A pulse of basin-wide rapid subsidence in the late Oligocene to early Miocene resulted from the propagation through New Zealand of an obliquely extensional boundary between the Pacific and Indian Plates.
The early middle Miocene heralded a switch to regression as mountains were uplifted along the plate boundary and abundant sediment began to fill the basin, advancing northwestward as a 1-km-high front of giant foreset beds that formed an extensive continental shelf. The abundant sediment masked the middle Miocene to Recent tectonic deformation that occurred in the eastern parts of the basin within the plate boundary zone.
